Clinical Arts Program (CAP) is a day-treatment program located in Long Beach, California. This program provides therapeutic services in a supportive environment for adults with intellectual or developmental and psychiatric disabilities (dual diagnoses). CAP offers individual and group therapies, psychosocial skills training, and an educational component that provides community integration, creative arts, health/wellness, and cultural activities. Key Benefits
Over the past decade, research has shown that people diagnosed with intellectual disabilities (i.e., mental retardation) generally do not undergo further evaluation for mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia. Mental health and emotional issues have been viewed as “behaviors” which has led to a “crisis intervention” approach whenever unaddressed issues surface. Such misconceptions have caused these individuals to be grossly underserved. The approach used at Clinical Arts Program aims to decrease the amount of crisis intervention needed by focusing on the preventive application of mental health services. Clinical Arts Program offers a variety of activities and interests centered on health and wellness, community integration, and tiered independence. Offerings include: R Community Services - Self-fulfillment is often found by giving back to the community. Volunteer projects such as raising funds for national disaster relief or participating in performing arts events for children in the community are just two of many ways individuals in the program achieve personal growth and satisfaction. R Recreation and Leisure - An adaptive computer lab is available and set up to accommodate a variety of physical abilities. Adaptive sports and community outings are also an ongoing part of programming. R Mental Health Services - For those with a need, individual or group therapy is offered, and can also include psychological testing, neuropsychological assessment, and behavior management plans. Transition support is provided for individuals who are changing their level of independence in the community. R Social Interest and Adjustment to Disability - Music and art appreciation, creative writing, discussing current social issues, film, reading, walking club, and cross cultural exploration -- these and other similar offerings link individuals together by their passions. Exploration and sharing personal interests are encouraged and influence how one perceives fulfillment in a world where disability is often viewed as a "not seen, not heard" culture.
This program serves those who may require assistance with activities of daily living, communication, and mobility.
